Kids Book Review and a new shop coming soon!

I have been busy working on many things - one of them being the re-branding of the wonderful blog 'Kids Book Review' - go and check it out. I love working on images where I can do whatever my imagination wants, and that's exactly what I did.

I can't wait to share what I have been up to these last few months. I have been working on custom dolls, a feature article in Homespun magazine including patterns for a gorgeous ballerina and nutcracker set and I am working on launching a brand new online shop filled with gorgeous patterns for you to make all your favourite Tiny Concept creations yourself. It is going to be exciting!

Floods

As you all know, the Queensland floods have affected us all as a nation and many of you have sent urgent messages asking about my well being (which is very much appreciated). I am relieved to report we were one of the very lucky ones to keep our house in tact, however my husband is still stranded in Ipswich, unable to get home since Monday. It looks likes many days to come before he is able to return to his family with his children who are missing him terribly. My thoughts are with everyone who is suffering from this disaster and I hope everyone keeps safe so we can begin to rebuild what has been taken away.

Introducing Iris {Available 9 December}

'Iris' has a gorgeous full length gown created from scalloped satin in musk pink. The gown is covered in hand stitched pearl beads and contrast embroidery.

Her waist is finished with simple chocolate double satin tied in a bow at the back. Her cashmere/mohair locks are hand stitched into an elegant side bun.

Iris will be available in the shop this Thursday at 5PM AEST

Introducing Claudia {available 9 December}

Claudia's gown was created in a lovely pale apple green shantung satin and soft chiffon. Her full skirt is shantung satin and layered with a complementing chiffon. The flower around her waist is made from apple green and tangerine chiffon. Each petal has been hand burnt and fixed in place on an apple green satin sash with a pearl centre.

Her carbon cashmere/mohair locks are hand stitched in place in an elegant side bun and finished with apple green sea pearls.

'Claudia' will be available in the shop on 9 December 5PM AEST

Introducing Sibella {available 9 December}

Sibella's gown is created from hand stitched layers of lace and stitched over frost pink shantung satin. Her waist is tied in a gorgeous double satin bow.

Her blonde locks feature a handmade 'fascinator' created from vintage lace and raw silk in pink. The flower petals have been hand stitched in raw silk and finished with crystal beads and fine bridal tulle.

'Sibella' will be available in the 'shop' on December 9, 5PM AEST

Introducing Grace {available December 9}

'Grace' was the only suitable name for this elegant girl. Her champagne satin bodice is hand-stitched with cream lace and clear crystals. The champagne satin full skirt is complemented with threes layers of soft bridal tulle making her look very 'princess like' indeed.

Her blonde mohair/cashmere locks are hand stitched into an elegant side bun. Her creamy complexion and soft blushed cheeks look perfect against this couture gown.

'Grace' will be available in the shop on December 9, 5PM AEST.

Have you been following the 'Handmade Living' blog tour? Welcome to day 2!

Working on Handmade Living has definitely been one of the highlights of my professional career so far. Today I will share with you a little inside information about the process and inspiration behind this book, as well as a sneak peek at some of the illustrations I created.

What exactly was my involvement in Handmade Living?

I was lucky enough to be asked by the talented Tania and Julie to illustrate for Handmade Living. Tania and I were first introduced after she stumbled across Tiny Concept and fell in love with my dolls (lucky me!). I equally admired her talent, and ever since then we converse on a daily basis for one reason or another. When the opportunity came up to be involved with such a magnificent publication, I literally jumped up and down screaming.

Not entirely sure what it is I would be illustrating, things quickly evolved and ideas started flowing as to what I could contribute to the pages. As well as the double page chapter headers, I created numerous projects though out the book, digitized the patterns and even photographed some of the images. There were many days when I had received 60+ emails from Tania, going to and fro to finalize details. We would both find ourselves sitting at the computer till the early hours of the morning, still making decisions on placement, colour, size - you name it!

What is the process undertaken to achieve the final illustrations?

Each chapter of the book begins with a double page line art illustration. I took inspiration from all the stunning designs within the chapter and even used some of the designs within the illustrations. After the initial sketch stage, I created all the illustrations digitally using Adobe Illustrator and a Wacom graphics tablet. This process usually takes hundreds of hours of constant drawing, fiddling and changing until I get something that I am happy with. When I finish an illustration, I like to step away from it for a day and then come back and look at it with fresh eyes - there is usually always changes to be made at this stage and it really allows you to look at it from a different perspective. Once the illustration was approved, the final image was sent to Tania where she added it to the pages of book. With both Tania and Julie in Canberra and me in Brisbane, it made for a love affair relationship with our computers!! I actually saw more of my computer screen than I did of my husband (or my housework!) throughout this process. I also illustrated all the 'swirls and curls', frames and decorative details seen throughout the book where Tania then beautifully placed them across the pages. I tried to add tiny personal touches to the illustrations - if you look carefully at the 'Nest' illustrated chapter header, you may even see drawings of Tania, Julie and myself hidden in the picture frames!

Below is a sneak peak of two chapter headers I illustrated for Handmade Living - 'Adorn' and 'little'.

A Handmade Christmas Wreath

A Christmas wreath is something I have never owned. Out of all the decorations I have collected over the years, I could not decide on what wreath to display on our door. While browsing the major departments stores, my children where mesmerized with the amount of 'Christmas' that flooded the shelves. Miss P picked up this very sparkly 'hat' which she thought was fantastic (turns out it was a Christmas wreath!), however it did give me an idea. I have seen many 'rag wreaths' across the web, so I decided to use the framework of this reasonably priced tinsel wreath and went about making a new family tradition. The entire family joined in and Miss P even learnt to tie her first bow!

This 'Basket of Babushkas' and fire engines/ambulance/police car softies are jetting off to Shop Handmade in Canberra today. I know some of you have been emailing asking when the dolls will be available and the simple answer is the end of next week! They are coming - slowly but surely.

Do you feel like you are on fast forward at the moment? Between final Kindy days, orientation, interviews for next year, Tiny Concept, Christmas, birthday party planning (yes, my sons birthday is a few days before christmas!), the exciting launch of Handmade Living, cooking, cleaning, shopping, christmas present searching, oh and lets not forget actually sleeping - I just can't seem to find enough hours in the day!!!! Do you think it is just the time of year?? Please tell me I am not the only one feeling like this. It is exciting BUT OH SO EXHAUSTING.

Did I see you at the Powderfinger concert?

Wow! Since having my babies, the closest I have come to attending a concert is watching the shorts on the evening news. Saturday night was different. Together with my husband, sister and brother-in-law, we all left our children in good care and headed to the final Powderfinger concert EVER! It did not disappoint.

After wandering around the house contemplating what it is people wear to these things now-a-days (because a lot can happen in 5 years of never really leaving the house!), we caught the train into the event and headed to Riverstage to get a prime spot. Where once I would have headed straight to the front of the stage and elbowed my way into position, maturity (and sore feet from ridiculous heels) allowed us to sit just slightly above the chaos of die-hard fans. I felt like I was a part of history. Were you there too? Wasn't it fantastic. I am making more of an effort to take some time out just for me. Next stop - U2!

Our new baby!

Things have been crazy around here the last few days with a new addition to the family. May I introduce 'Mischa', our new kitten. She is 4 1/2 weeks old and was a stray rescued from the RSPCA. She loves my studio and thinks Christmas has come early with the endless supply of toys she has found - mostly balls of wool, ribbons and doll limbs! I can't believe how quickly she has settled into her new life, and as you can imagine two little ones certainly give her LOTS of love and attention.

When our wonderful and loyal cat Narla passed away a few weeks ago after 13 years of love, I honestly wasn't sure if I would be open to giving a home to a new kitten. The children were desperately confused about what had happened to him, and finding the words to tell them was one of the hardest things I have had to do as a parent so far. Although I miss Narla terribly, when the children started putting dirt into water and saying 'here is my new pet fish', or tying pieces of rubbish onto ribbon and pulling it around the house like a dog, although I wasn't ready, I knew they were. So, Mischa has now become part of our little family and I look forward to many wonderful years watching her grow.

Subtle changes make me happy!

Are you like me? Do you feel the need to change your entire house around at every spare moment you get? Being a Mum at home, I spend A LOT of time looking at the rooms in my house. One day I will just wake up and say "I need a change", closely followed by the moan of my husband 'NOT AGAIN'. There is a big difference between my husband and I. I have spent my entire childhood moving from house to house, place to place. My parents are talented builders/designers and spent their days renovating houses. When one was finished, it was time to move on the the next. I didn't realise it at the time, but I loved the excitement of change - a new window to look out and see a different view on life. When I met my husband, he still lived in the house he was born in. The concept of this fascinated me, and I thought I longed for the stability of living in a house long enough to get to know it better. Since we have been together I have managed to convince him to move 5 times already ( 5 times more than he has ever moved in his entire life), but on our last move he made it clear this would be it for quite some time to come! So, after a long winded story, if I can't move houses, I have to move everything INSIDE the house to get that feeling of change.

Lately, the changes have been a little more subtle. Now that my babies are now children, they have strong opinions about how they see their rooms, and are not necessarily keen on too much change. Instead I have been making pillows! It is amazing the change a bright cushion makes to a room. I have recently re-upholstered my boring brown suede bed with a gorgeous textured blue/grey linen. With that change in place, I added a sunshine yellow striped pillow with linen piping and a white ruffle pillow with grey contrast stitching. The ruffle pillow is actually created from an old bed sheet and I just love the little touch of femininity it adds to our otherwise quite masculine room.

Miss P LOVES colour! I always imagined a subtle room in neutral tones and highlights of a European colour palette for her - how wrong was I! She has an eye-burning fuchsia pink feature wall with accessories to match. Even the all white quilt cover had to be a major negotiation to keep in the room. So instead of fighting it, I joined in the colour fun and made her a giant rainbow ruffled cushion. It also doubles as a floor cushion for her to sit and read and she LOVES it!

Even Mr M is getting in on the act. On a recent visit to our local fabric store, he literally jumped out of his pram when he spotted a roll filled with cars and caravans. Determined he would not leave the store without it, I purchased a few metres not entirely sure what I would create with it. He had other ideas however, and upon returning home he led me by the hand to my machine, fabric crumpled under the other arm and said 'A quilt and pillow please Mummy' - how could I resist.

Even though I won't be moving house anytime soon, I am beginning to fall in love with creating a 'home', pillow by pillow.

Christmas Countdown

Christmas is just around the corner (6 1/2 weeks to go!), so I have been very busy stitching and assembling gorgeous festive wares. To me, nothing represents Christmas better than the tradional colour scheme of Red and White. A box of linen french inspired stockings, christmas card packs, festive bunting, babushkas and heart decorations have been sent to Shop Handmade today.

Take a pair of pink ceramic lampshades for $2 from the local thrift store, a pair of water damaged lampshades for $3, some linen, a little bit of embroidery and enamel paint and what do you get?? A gorgeous new set of french inspired lampshades for $5 a pair!!

The lamp bases were cleaned with sugar soap and left to dry, then given two coats of matte white enamel paint. I then measured around the lampshades for the linen fabric, embroidered some sweet words - 'Bonne Nuit' (meaning 'goodnight' in French!) and used a healthy amount of spray glue and pegs to apply the linen to the lampshade - within a matter of hours a new pair of original bedside lamps.

I have recently acquired this handcrafted bed and bedsides made from gorgeous old cedar. These have been lovingly made and designed by my father.

Introducing Oceanina and SHOP news!

This lovely lady is heading to sunny California today. I sometimes wonder when I send my 'girls' to their new home where they will be sitting and who did they go to? In this case I know she will be joined by other friends, as the lovely Diane has given a home to a few of my girls, and I have a feeling this won't be the last!

'Oceanina' was a name given to her by Diane's daughter and she has been created from the most divine embroidered and beaded silk. Her waist has a double satin bow and her high bun is finished with a co-ordinating vintage flower.

Some of you have been asking if I will be creating any girls in time for Christmas - well the exciting answer is YES!!!! I have a very limited run of girls that will be available in the shop over the next few weeks in time to put under the tree for Christmas. If you can't wait that long, please don't hesitate to contact me (tinyconcept@live.com.au) as I am putting the finishing touches on them and you could decide on the hair/skin colour or the name if you like!

Surprise!

Even though I have turned yet another year older, my day started out with the wonderful smell of baked croissants floating through my bedroom door. It was such a lovely surprise to see the smiling faces of my gorgeous family offering this beautiful breakfast and lovely gifts. My little girl even hand illustrated a gorgeous card reading 'Happy Birthday Mummy, I love you'. Every gift has been wrapped in fabric from my collection and tied with a ribbon - Miss P personally selected each one.

If you are to ever purchase a cookbook, the Women's Weekly 'World Table' is AMAZING! I will be cooking my way through the entire book.

Thank you family, I feel so special - it makes getting older so much better!

OMG! Look what the postman delivered

Can you believe it - a few advance copies of Handmade Living arrived in the mail today. It is gorgeous, just gorgeous! I can't wait for you all to be able to see it in person for yourself - it will be well worth the wait, I promise!

My flights and accommodation are all booked ready to depart to Canberra on December 10 to attend the official launch of the book at Shop Handmade. My husband will be looking after the kids for three entire nights on his own. It is certainly going to be a weekend of excitement, tears and shear terror (thinking about what on earth my kids will be eating for dinner - not about the launch!!!).

Twins....again!

I created another set of twins for the lovely Sonja quite some time ago, but am only getting the chance to post about them now! The story of these two lovely ladies is really sweet. Sonja and her twin sister both attended their school formals with very different styles of dresses(remember the gorgeous taupe pink silk dupion twins I created?) Both of these dresses were made lovingly by their late Grandmother. Sonja had already approached me about making her formal dress in replica twin girls using the original dress, and now it was time to make her sister's dress in miniature twin sister form as well.

Here is the result.

Black silk dupion halter dress with a gorgeous french roll hairstyle. Given this was my first attempt at creating a french roll on one of my girls, it was a little tricky, but it all turned out in the end. I absolutely love creating dolls that have such sentimental value and history behind - I feel so lucky to be apart of someones life story.

Our first dip

School holidays have been and gone, and fun was had by all (most of the time). We have however been dealing with weeks and weeks and weeks (literally) of rain. Fantastic for the garden, not so good for little ones stuck inside! We did however manage a break in the weather to take our first dip in the pool for the year. I can't wait for the long hot days spent lounging in and around the water, especially now since both little ones can swim on their own - no more floaties, rings and life vests!!!

I feel like I have had the most productive day. Ever since I have completed my work for Handmade Living, I have had a little more time to do those things that seemed to get lost in the daily juggle. I am really getting the hang of making homemade bread rolls (with the help of my bread maker), but if you have never attempted them before I strongly recommend it. The taste is amazing and they are really easy. With school holidays beginning next week, I thought I better start thinking about those activities that can fill the day with fun. I started new batches of playdough using natural food colouring. I love this stuff as it keeps in the fridge for up to six months. Call me crazy, but I have also begun a new quilt. This one is completely stitched by hand using the paper pattern method. I am very new to quilting and really am just learning as I go, but I am loving the colours. I plan on sharing progress photos as I go - fingers crossed! Well, that has been my day so far. I am heading to Zumba class tonight which I LOVE, so who knows what tomorrow brings!

Inspired by my sister's enthusiasm for creating and this gorgeous summery weather, I attempted my first patchwork bag. The zig zag pattern was an idea I had to create in a queen size quilt, so I thought I would test it out on a tote bag first. The bag has been padded with natural cotton batting and lined with sun yellow linen. I am really pleased with how it turned out, although getting the pointy edges on the zig zag was a little tricky. I think I am now ready to attempt the 'quilt'. It will be navy and white zig zag with yellow bind and backing. Don't hold your breath - it could take me a very long while to complete!

Wow, what an amazing day! We finally took the family to Strawberry Fields to pick our own strawberries! Although it had been raining on and off all day, the kids thought it was heaven squealching in the mud and much to their delight picking strawberries directly from the plant! I couldn't keep the smile from my face the entire day watching them run from plant to plant laughing with delight when a gorgeous burst of strawberry revealed itself from under the leaves. We finished the day eating our bounty of strawberries dipped in melted chocolate. Happy Fathers Day!

Introducing HANDMADE LIVING - the book!

AT LAST, I can reveal what I have been busy doing over the last few months!! Here it is - the first official glimpse of Handmade Living - an amazing publication from Handmade Press. I have had the wonderful opportunity to illustrate for the book as well as contribute quite a few very special projects for you all to create yourselves. Handmade Living is an amazing collaboration of designers and artists across Australia, and with the wonderful talents of Tania McCartney and Julie Nichols, I can tell you I am squealing with excitement to know the official book launch is only months away. There will only be a limited print run of this book, so if you would like to secure your copy before they go on sale, head to the Handmade Canberra website ! Did I also mention I illustrated the new look for the Handmade Canberra website. Told you I have been busy!

On other exciting news for Tiny Concept, I have been given another amazing opportunity to create an exclusive range of one-of-a-kind dolls for Two Story Company IN NEW YORK!!!!!!! A total of 30, yes 30 dolls will be sent to the amazing city in time for Christmas! You all of course will be the first to see them! Busy times ahead!

Tiny Concept at Finders Keepers this weekend

Wow, where has the time gone! Poor, poor neglected blog, oh how I have missed you. I promise I have kept myself very busy lately. I have discovered the knitting loom (more on this soon), I am putting the finishing touches on the illustrations for the gorgeous Handmade Living book, and I am in the middle of doing the last few stitches on another set of twin dolls for the lovely Sonia.

One of my gorgeous girls created exclusively for Udessi has gone to a fabulous new home in the UK, but some other special girls will be available this weekend at the Udessi stall (along with some other gorgeous wares as seen above). The lovely Kim will be taking Udessi to the fabulous Finders Keepers Market THIS WEEKEND in Brisbane, so be sure to say hi!

As for me, I can't wait to share with you all what I have been up to. Stay tuned!

The Belles of Grace

I have been working on many new creations for Tiny Concept. I find that I get bored very easily with doing the same over and over, not to mention the fact that I have so many ideas I have filled books and notepads galore! Here is a doll I finished today. Miss P has claimed her as her own and has requested a 'prince' to go with her. Not sure about the prince, but I might create some more 'Belles of Grace' in different colours and fabrics. I think they would look great as a collection!

Mini shop update

As promised (I know, a little late!), I have added the 'Travel Family' pillows and Coco and Kiki to the shop. One set of the travel family pillows have also been sent to Shop Handmade. I hope to have a shop update of my one-of-a-kind dolls towards the end of July (fingers crossed!!), but of course I will keep you all informed ahead of time! Better get back to the sewing machine - so much to sew so little time!!!

Handmade Living Calendar

Most of you by now have heard about the Handmade Living book, but what you may not know is I am designing a gorgeous Handmade Living Calendar for 2011. It is going to be a beautiful french style postcard calender that features talented designers every month including photographs, information about a featured product and illustrations drawn by me!!! Obviously there can only be twelve designers featured and there very few places left. I am so excited to be able to work on such an exciting production. Above are some images of a sample I created using one of my dolls ('Autumn' was designed exclusively for Udessi), this is just to give you an idea of the layout. The top portion of the calender can be snipped off and used to send a loved one, collect or even frame your favourites as an artwork was the month is over. I can't wait to share more with you once all the designers have been handpicked and told the exciting news - applications close Friday May 7 - that's next week!

Somewhere to rest their tiny heads

After recently travelling with two little ones on a plane over the Easter break, I realised a few things. 1. Try and avoid late night flights - it only ends in tears 2. Carry as little on-board luggage as possible - you only end up carrying the kids backpacks, your bags, the snack & drinks bag, the kids favourite soft toys and of course THE KIDS and 3. Try and sit your husband in the seats directly in front of you instead of across the aisle - it is IMPOSSIBLE to stop your child kicking the seat in front of them and you inevitably spend the entire flight holding their legs to avoid abuse from in front. I also found the children where unable to reach the tray table to eat or draw and trying to get them to sleep was another nightmare in itself. When I returned, I decided to make them a 'travel family'. A pillow sized doll that can be used to place behind them to reach the tray and see out the window, to rest their heads when they eventually fall asleep, and to be used for play when they are awake. This has turned out to be fantastic, and after a long drive to see relatives over the long weekend, I was pleased to see they were well received. I am looking forward to seeing how they go on our next flight!

It is going to be full of glossy photographs, projects, how-to's and stunning handmade products, while the calender will feature a talented designer every month of the year - all this will be in print and on the shelves in time for Christmas!!! Last week, I sat at my sewing machine stitching away frantically to finish 16 new dress up out fits for the children at our local kindergarten. In amongst them were new kitchen aprons for the gourmet meals they cook. cowboy and pirate outfits, tulle ballet skirts and dresses with frilly aprons. I am pleased to say they were a hit and I love to see the children create imaginative 'scenes' on their fantastic stage.

I will wish everyone a wonderful Easter now, as I will not be returning for two weeks. I will have some new doll creations to share with you all and other wonderful news.

Introducing Riley

When asked to create a commission piece for the lovely Tania, I honestly wasn't sure if I was going to be able to produce something we would both be happy with. Tania is the incredibly talented author of the 'Riley' series of children's books. She asked if I would be able to create a doll of the character 'Riley' that she will use to display during book signings, markets etc. I knew from the beginning it was going to be a challenge. He would need a complete new pattern designed for the body and creating the accessories seemed almost impossible! After trialling at least five different figures, I finally came up with one that I was happy with. The rest just seemed to fall into place. His satchel, boots and goggles are all handmade using beautiful, supple leather. Believe it or not, his goggles are constructed from the lid of a Chinese container and a lot of patience!! Although this was definitely a challenge - making Riley was what made me realise that this is my passion. I have had a wonderful break - from sewing, from blogging, from designing, from thinking!!! I was working so many hours, that all I could think was "I want to slow down"- I needed just a minute to myself. After having the opportunity to take a long, deep breath, I realised that THIS IS WHAT I LOVE! I love creating dolls, crafting their tiny outfits, designing new gowns, drawing, designing, thinking of new ideas. I thought I wanted to step back, possibly even step away for awhile, but I can't - I won't. For those that new I couldn't do it - thank you for not believing in me!!!! I now realise this is what I was born to do. I received quite a few emails with many of you feeling like you have hit a wall in a similar way. Trying to juggle a career while still being there for your family and other commitments. It is hard - damn hard, and if I could suggest one thing, take a step back for a few weeks to clear your mind and decide what is really important. Work out the reasons why you are doing what you do in the first place. If it right for you at this time, you will find your way back or move forward onto a new direction. So, I thank you all for your patience and understanding, and for sticking by me in my time of uncertainty. I have so many more ideas to share with you in the future, so many new ideas to turn into reality. I am hoping to feature some tutorials here as well as dolls and everything in between very soon. Here are some little projects I have been working on in the past few weeks for my little ones. I will also have two very special dolls to share with you at the end of the week, so hope to have you back then!

She also has a matching blush pink bracelet and necklace set in miniature pearls.

I keep a notebook by my bed to right down my thoughts during the night - it drives my husband mad
I am very good at roller skating - but am better off being a spectator for any other sport
I used to get paid to travel the world and research clothing trends for children - I know, it was a tough life!
My favourite food is Turkish, but it is very closely followed by Greek and French
I lived in London and worked in a bar - typical Australian story, but oh so much fun!!

My New Chair - before & after

I have been working on restoring this chair for such a long time, and I am happy to say I have finally finished it! I purchased it from ebay for a bargain, and replaced the fabric with gorgeous cream and beige stripe linen. After a good sand back and re-paint in 'Natural white', I roughed up the edges to give it a vintage look. The upholstery is finished with a cream coloured braid. I love it!

A dress for her

Miss P has been wanting a dress made by 'Mummy' for awhile now, and although I am supposed to be sewing new dolls for my shop, I promised I would make a few quick pieces for her. Being very impatient at times (a trait she inherited from her Mother!) of course she wanted to be able to wear her new dress ASAP. So, I frantically began to assemble a dress I knew would take less than an hour to complete. She loved the colours which came as a surprise given her love of pink, but she is happily dancing around proud of her new dress. I also made a simple top in red & white stripes which I love on her. I think she will be getting a few more dresses in the future!

I know, I know it has been awhile hasn't it!! With the excitement of Christmas and a blissful holiday away with my gorgeous family I have finally returned to the reality of 'real life'! I have lots of exciting plans for the year ahead, starting with the update of my shop with all new creations. This should be happening over the next few weeks, but I will be sure to keep you posted. I won't be attending many markets this year as I have been kept quite busy with custom orders. I also have my exciting venture with Tania - illustrating her wonderful new book (The above illustration is one of many completed over my 'break'.) I will be concentrating on decorating a few more rooms in my house and I am in the first stages of learning French - more than knowing how to ask for 'two baguettes' and 'directions for the toilet' . This has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl and I thought I had put it off long enough! Miss P is starting pre-school this week so I think 2010 is going to bring some big changes to our household. I hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year and I look forward to sharing a fabulous 2010!

My best kept secret!

For such along time now, I have been keeping the most exciting secret! I am so happy to say I can finally reveal my news. There is no secret I have been a huge fan of Tania McCartney's children's books. Her 'Riley' series are based on his character traveling through exotic places like China and Hong Kong. Tania has been a massive supporter of Tiny Concept, and to my surprise she approached me to collaborate with her on a new children's book which she had already written an amazing manuscript. Can you believe it - me, illustrating a children's book. This has been a dream of mine that I never thought achievable. Above is a DRAFT illustration to give a glimpse of what is to come. I will be keeping you all updated of the events and processes of this amazing book coming to life. I can't say too much more, but be sure it will be exciting!

When I was approached by Sonia to create a custom doll for her and her sister, I didn't expect what came next! Armed with a handcrafted gown worn by the sisters to their formal, Sonia begins the story of this precious gown being the last one made by their Grandmother before she passed on. The craftsmanship was divine, made from raw silk and french lace, Sonia then asked if I would create a set of dolls exactly the same using this gown. It would be a gift for her twin Sister, and the gowns were to replicate the original exactly. Now as you all know, I do not create the same doll twice, but in this instance I was happy to oblige! I cried to make the first cut into the gown, but quickly went about trying to preserve as much of their Grandmothers original handiwork as possible. The lace on the hemline of the gowns, is still the original hand stitching (which was exquisitely executed). I would love to have had a sewing lesson or two from this talented Grandmother. I was honoured to be entrusted with such a precious memory, and it is moments like these that make me love what I do even more.

When asked by a lovely Grandmother to custom make some soft cubes for her granddaughter, Pria - how could I resist. I created them using textural fabrics of corduroy and raised spot swiss cotton. It was requested to have 'Pria's' name appliqued on one side, so I thought it would be cute to add some shapes and other letters spelling 'four' and 'pink'. Thank you to the lovely Rebecca from Edward and Lilly, who asked me to do a quick interview for her blog. With Christmas just around the corner, I have been trying to make special things to go with gifts that Santa may be bringing my kids. I have heard whispers that Miss P will be receiving a beautiful wooden kitchen on Christmas day. Over the next few weeks, I plan on making delicious felt sweets to store on the shelves of her new kitchen. Here are a few cookies I have started - cupcakes, sweets, aprons and tea towels should soon follow {fingers crossed}. P.S. This photo was taken on my brand new toy - I finally purchased a DSLR!!!!! I ended up buying a Nikon D5000 with extras - It will take awhile to figure out all the gadgets but so far I am VERY impressed.

Dandelion Fairy Lamp

Miss P has been having trouble sleeping as she is petrified of the dark. I have tried everything from night lights (which cast scary shadows across the room), princess torches (that ran out of batteries every night before 2am in the morning) to glow worms, but nothing seemed to help ease her fear. I came across this tutorial to make a gorgeous lamp using fairy lights. After an hour of cutting, gluing and assembling, Miss P was so pleased with the result that she slept through the entire night free from nightmares and crying! She thinks it looks like a beautiful flower and make believes her fairy friends live inside - I am just happy to have my little girl excited to go to sleep.

OK, so I didn't get a chance to show you all my new creations before they went to market. Things got a little crazy after our week away and the night before the markets I actually didn't even make it to bed! It was worth it though. The day went beyond my expectations with almost everything selling out way before the days end. I was a little sad that I didn't even get to photograph many of my new girls to show you before they went to new homes, but there was just not enough hours in the day. Most of my girls in the shop have also sold and I am having a new shop update by the end of the week with all new creations (well, the few that I have available!). It is always fantastic to meet new people and many of you who follow my blog. I had lovely ladies bring in treasured wedding dresses and formal dresses made by Grandma's to be turned into my girls. I am so honoured to be given the opportunity to create such sentimental pieces. Thank you to everyone for your amazing support, I am blown away by the response. Here are a few pics that I quickly snapped on the day. I also have to say a huge thank you Nat for all your help on the day. I could not have done it without you!

New card designs and my 100th post!

I wanted to share some of my new card designs that will be launched at Mathilda's Market in November. I have a limited run of Christmas cards that will be sold in a pack of 6. Each pack has two original Tiny Concept designs on metallic silver or gold. The other new cards were sketches I had finished a few weeks ago. I wanted to create a range using muted pastel tones and line art images. This is also my 100th post! Thank you to everyone who has been so amazingly supportive and for all your kind words - it is very much appreciated. I also need to send a huge thank you to my wonderful Husband and gorgeous kids who spoilt me rotten for my birthday yesterday. Can you believe after organising a friend to babysit the kids, my husband not only took me to my favourite Turkish restaurant for dinner, but when we returned home he lit an entire room with candles surrounding my new massage table that he gave me as a gift. I then received a very relaxing massage complete with scented oils, rolled towels, a satin gown and enigma - Thank you Corey you are amazing. (sorry to make you all jealous!)

Remember the collection I created exclusively for Udessi? They are now available in the Udessi gallery!! I am so excited about this new direction for Tiny Concept. I have always wanted to create more elaborate dolls, but I have tried to consider they are designed for children and may not be appropriate for play with these intricate details. When presented with an opportunity to create them as art pieces, I knew I could design them the way I had dreamed. Each doll created for Udessi took hundreds of hours to complete including details such as 150 hand cut and burnt chiffon flowers with crystals centres & 10 metres of hand stitched french lace on a three tiered veil. I loved every minute of it and I can't wait to create more. I also love how Kim has photographed them for her gallery - simple & pure. In other events, I am still sewing madly on new creations for Mathildas Market and I endeavour to have eight new girls to show you over the next week, which will be available on November 1. I hope you are having a great weekend!

The Udessi Collection

Finally I can reveal my very exciting news! A few months ago the very lovely Kim Wallace from Udessi approached me about creating a collection of dolls that are designed to be admired as an art piece. They would be sold among other much admired artists through her gallery shop including Tsk Tsk, Feed the Dog and Renee Treml. I was so excited about the possibilities that I began working immediately after our meeting! I have spent the last six weeks intensely hand sewing, pattern making and stitching and finally I can reveal the Complete Udessi Collection. Kim collected the 'girls' this morning and they will be left in her very capable hands - I have to admit though, after tears and many finger injuries I incurred while creating them, it was a little sad to see them go. I had some fun with photography this time around, trying to capture the essence of their personality. I hope you enjoy!

After what seems to be the longest time, I took a much needed break from the machine yesterday. I have been working on something very exciting for Tiny Concept {but you will have to hold your breath, as all will be revealed next week I promise} I decided to begin some illustrations I have had in my mind for what seems like forever. Every time I sit down to sketch, there is always something else that needs to be tended to first. Finally, with pen in hand I began to draw. At the start it felt like riding a bike after a while - you remember how to do it, but it feels a little uneasy at first. Then it happened, the joy I received from such simple strokes returned. I had forgotten how good it felt. I found myself so captivated that I was still sitting in my pajamas at six o'clock last night, wondering where the time had gone! I am still a little rusty, but I thought I would share some of my work in progress. Some of these might just end up on something for Tiny Concept, but for now I am just remembering what it was about art that got me excited all those years ago.

Miss P received a donut maker with an icing tool as a gift from her Grandparents, so of course our Craft Day quickly turned to a cooking day! Our first time at attempting donuts was not very successful, but Miss P had fun drowning them in glaze and sprinkles - not even the kids attempted to eat these after she was finished! The cupcakes on the other hand were a huge success. So much for my 'swimsuit ready diet'!

Blog Love & Christmas Orders

Tiny Concept has been getting some blog love lately. Thanks to Angela, from Angela Henrie Designs, Emma from LittleMissEmma, Tania from Tania McCartney Press and Viv from Ish and Chi (if I have missed any please let me know!). It really is an overwhelming feeling and I very much appreciate all your kind words. Many of you are starting to think ahead to Christmas, which lets face it will be here before we can blink an eye, and I am loving the custom orders I am receiving in preparation. Just a reminder that I will be heading to the Mathilda's Christmas Market in Brisbane on November 1, where you will be able to see my dolls (and lots of special goodies not seen in my shop!). Given my workload at the moment, I will only be able to accept 8 (eight) more custom doll orders to be ready in time to put under the Christmas tree. Isabella's gown is made from a gorgeous linen with floral sheer blossoms. The dress is lined with two layers of purple chiffon and finished with a petticoat of lace and tulle. Her rosette is made from vintage lace and purple chiffon complete with a crystal centre. Isabella is another custom order for the lovely Tania.

A new stockist for Tiny Concept

A basket overflowing with Tiny Concept creations was sent off to a gorgeous store in Sydney yesterday, called Molly & Jack. The lovely Kerri has given a home to Babushkas in many colours, Toy Soldiers, Policeman, hand inked tiny dolls and sailboats. I fell in love with her store and I am excited my creations will be sitting amongst other labels I admire. One tomato salad

Can you believe I found this old chest on the side of the road? I had so many plans for it, but in the end I decided it would make the perfect little garden bed for the kids. After our visit to the local nursery, while the little ones had fun feeding the goats and patting the horses, I picked a very small selection of tomatoes, herbs and of course a pink flowering plant. Now, I should let you know when it comes to green thumbs, my sister got every shade, while I was left with nothing. Needless to say, this is the biggest garden I am willing to attempt. Anything that grows beautifully at our place was inherited from the previous owners! I am hoping to at least have one tomato to show for today's efforts in the coming months. One tomato salad anyone?

A quilt for Dolly

I have been meaning to finish these quilts for Miss P's dolls for such a long time now, I thought today was a good day to procrastinate about what I should really be doing - needless to say the quilts are now finally finished. I first saw this quilt pattern via Hop Skip Jump. I have only attempted a few quilts in my time (many of which all need to be "finished"), but I did enjoy making these ones on a tiny scale. At least the dollies are warm and cosy!

Craft Days

For our craft project today, Miss P and I decided to do our version of recycling cans. Peyton chose her fabric colours (pink of course!) and I chose a nautical theme. We cut a paper template and the fabric to size, then used some heavy iron-on interfacing to give the fabric some stability. The fabric was attached using double sided tape, then Miss P chose the matching ribbons. I have to admit, I am enjoying the end result of this craft day just as much as Miss P. It's nice to have somewhere pretty to put my scissors, and I can now find them easily!

Ella's gorgeous gown is made from layers of vintage lace finished with lace cap sleeves. Her dress is lined with lilac double satin with a matching lilac bow tied around her waist. Ella is a custom order for my dear friend Tania. She will be a beautiful gift underneath the Christmas tree this year for her daughter, 'Ella'.

Craft Days

We are planning to take Daddy to the beach on the weekend for Fathers Day, so Miss P and I decided to make a sun hat as her craft project for today. We used this pattern from Craftzine. It was such an easy pattern to follow, and the hat took less than an hour to make from drafting the pattern to the finished creation. We added a simple gathered rosette in the lining fabric and some ribbon to help keep the hat on in windy weather. I think Little M will be getting one as well!

Camera Advice

I am finally taking the plunge and purchasing a new camera! I am hoping to do a short a course to improve my photography skills - lets face it I can't get an worse. Currently I am looking at the Nikon D90 digital SLR with the 18-200 VR lens. If anyone has any comments about this camera, or if you would like to suggest another brand that you love, please let me know!!!!

Ever since reality hit me that Miss P will be going to Pre-school for three days a week next year, I have been trying to spend as much precious time with her that I can. While Little M is sleeping, I try and plan a special project that we can do together everyday. So far we have made a dolls house out of nappy boxes, baked corn bread and cupcakes, made a table cloth cubby house and today we made this little bag together. It was so simple. The 'hula girl' was a design I did years ago and I printed it onto iron-on transfer paper. The handles are made from cane rings and wrapped in inexpensive coloured twine both available from spotlight. Peyton chose the colour of the lining (how did you guess it would be pink!) and we both sewed the simple bag design on her very own machine. It is days like these I love being a Mother!

Mae's stunning gown is made from vintage Japanese silk. The 'spot' design on the silk is made by hand knotting each piece and then dip dying the fabric. Her full length gown features hand stitched bows on her shoulders with a matching bow in her hair. Mae is a custom order for the lovely Natalie.

Introducing Ashlen

Ashlen's frock is made from tangerine eyelet cotton and layered with chocolate linen. Her flowers have all been hand cut and stitched to form a floral feature around her neck. She also has a matching corsage tied with a chocolate gross grain ribbon. This ribbon is tied around her waist in a bow at the back. Ashlen is a custom order for a special little girl in America.

Proud Mamma moment

Sitting down in my studio today has really put some things into perspective. Miss P asked if she could make some jewels while her brother was asleep. I love it when she wants to sit next to me and create, so I offered my craft drawers for her to find something she thought she could use. She quickly found some "ocean pearls" and other beads and began to thread them in a pattern on some beading wire. Meanwhile I am sitting in amazement at the pattern forming. After she had finished, I asked how she would like to tie them together. She then chose some ribbon and asked if I could sew them on the end so she can tie it in a bow. I was so proud I cried - she thought of this all on her own and we were both so pleased with the result. So from now on, when I have those days when I wonder "what am I doing this for", I want to think of this day, because it gave me so much pleasure to know that in some small way, I have showed her how to find the path to creativeness like my Mother showed me!

Things are looking up in our household this morning! I have managed to grab more than two hours sleep at one time, the little ones are feeling a tiny bit better, and my gorgeous Mum has sent a 'care' package containing the most adorable babushka dolls I have ever seen. The smallest one measures only 3mm high and all dolls stack into each other. Each one has been hand painted in Russia. Thanks Mum, you have really made my day. I am attempting to get creative, so fingers crossed the sun is shining on me today!

sickness, sewing and sadness

My little ones are sick AGAIN! While browsing through the glossy magazines at my local book store yesterday, my poor little boy decided that was a good place to loose all he had to eat and drink that day. Luckily, the shop owner was very understanding. I feel like everything is getting on top of me, or it could be my lack of sleep night after night. I wonder if it is ever going to end. But then again, there will always be something. My studio is full of limbs - arms, legs, bodies all ready to be turned into something wonderful. I just wish I had more time to work on them. I guess I am feeling a little blue. I was hoping these would cheer me up a little!

New 'girls' for the shop

As my little girls are finding new homes, I am adding a few more to the shop. Here are the two latest creations, Lulu and Mischa. I have also put a few more of my cards in there as well. I love that my cards are being sent anywhere from Switzerland to Hollywood. Thanks for your support from around the globe!

Colouring Pages

If you are anything like me, I am constantly searching for colouring books for my daughter that haven't got licensed merchandise and characters plastered from cover to cover. Virtually impossible right! So every so often, I draw a few pages for Miss P and print them out in line art for her to colour as she pleases. I thought I would share a couple of pages that you can print at home. Once your little artists have worked their magic with pencils and crayons, why not send me a pic/scan/email and I will have a 'gallery showing' to display their works of art, here on my blog.
